Kaashidhoo, the fifth largest inhabited island of the Maldivians is synonym with the term natural beauty. The name itself gives a great hint to its natural beauty. The word “kaashi” in Dhivehi means “coconut”. As the name denotes the island is thick with coconut trees. The island is so vegetative so the main source of income is none other than cultivation.

The island’s beauty is also magnified by the corals extant to a considerable distance from the western side of the island. In the eastern side the waves touch our foot. Sometimes we can also find the diving of dolphins on this side. So this point is also known as Dolphin point.

 

Location

Geographically speaking the island is situated at the northern tip of Male’. But it is only 88 km away from Male’. For the easiness of its administration it is included in the Kaafu Atoll. The exact location is 04°57′20″N 73°27′53″E.

 

Size

Kaashidhoo is the fifth largest island of the whole of Maldivian archepelago. The Island extents 2.83 km in its length and 1.3 km in its width. About 55% of the land is using for cultivation. There are also some forest areas and mangroves in the uninhabited part of the island. That’s most of the part is thick with plants and trees.

 

Population

Kaashidhoo is a highly inhabited island as compared with other nearby islands. About 40% of the land is occupied by Maldivians. The total population is about 2000. More people are migrating to this island because of its living facilities.

 

Historical importance

Kaashidhoo is known in the whole of Maldivian island as well as in the world history. The reason for its fame is that the site is believed to have been used by the Pre –Islamic Maldivians of the 7th and 8th century. There are so many excavation works was done in various times. As a result a large area was excavated revealing 64coral stone structures.

 

Occupation

In this island the natives are engaged in various professions. Some of them are teachers of the Kaafu.Atoll school in the island. Among them Nurses is there who work at Kaashidhoo health centre and also in Male’. Police, Administrative officials, farmers, merchants, fishermen all kinds of professionalisms can be seen this island.

 

Availability of Goods

Almost all kinds of things which we used in our life are available in this island. Even though the grocery items and other commercial items are importing from Male’ most of the vegetables are cultivating in the island itself.

There are many shops and restaurants in every nook and corner of the island. All kinds of mobile and internet recharging with high speed 3G facilities are available here in low cost.

 

Transportation

There are so many boat or ferry services including passenger and Goods service are available from male to here in almost all days. They include a government service ferry namely Huvandho and some locally owned ferries for the transportation facility.

 

Climate

One of the striking features of the island is its climatic condition. Really it’s a God’s gift to those who come here. It’s neither too hot nor too cold. But the island has rainy season as well as the summer season. The cool wind which blows on day time makes the dry day a frozen one. Absolutely have a calm and quite atmosphere on this island.
